When Should I Do the TEFL/TESOL?

If you have the time and resources we alway advise that you do a TEFL or TESOL as soon as you are able to do so as:

  1. 1.With a better understanding of the mechanics and challenges of teaching English as a Foreign Language including lesson planning, classroom management and how to evaluate student progress you will be better equipped to do interviews and present yourself as a serious contender for an English Teacher contract.

  2. 2.Direct Placement posts require that all applicants be ready to leave shortly after they have passed an interview - it is impossible to complete a 100hr TEFL/TESOL in the often very short period of time between the interview and flight date.

If you do not have the time or the resources to do the TEFL/TESOL as soon as possible and would prefer to secure a job offer before you spend the time and money on a course you do have the option of applying for one our biannual intakes.

This options permits you to apply, interview and then pay for and complete a TEFL or TESOL several weeks before you fly to Korea. Here is a timeline to see how this works:

The advantage of this options is you do not pay for a TEFL/TESOL until you have ascertained that you can get a position.

If you choose this option you will need to indicate your intention to complete the training before you fly to Korea. If you choose this option you need to  fill in the title of the certificate (TEFL, TESOL or CELTA), the name of the Accrediting Institution, the date you will graduate from the course along with the number of course hours in Question 8-2 (English Teaching Certification/Teaching Certification) in the official EPIK Application Form.

The disadvantage is that you may have a limiting handicap during your interview by not having the benefit of what you learn in the TEFL/TESOL classroom to answer classroom management/lesson planning/student evaluation questions.
